At least 28 Pakistani soldiers were killed on Saturday when NATO helicopters and combat jets fired on two border posts in the country's northwest, prompting army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani to direct his troops to prepare for "an effective response" even as authorities cut off all supplies for US forces in Afghanistan.
US Marines to wind down Afghan combat in 2012
US Marines will march out of Afghanistan by the thousands next year, winding down combat in the Taliban heartland and testing the US view that Afghan forces are capable of leading the fight against a battered but not yet beaten insurgency in the country's southwestern reaches.
Seven killed in Iraq bombings 
Two roadside bombs exploded west of Baghdad on Saturday, killing at least seven people and wounding seven others, security officials and a doctor said.

Arab League: Syriamisses observer deadline
Syria missed an Arab League deadline to allow hundreds of observers into the country, prompting the bloc to consider economic sanctions against Damascus for its eight-month crackdown on dissent, a senior diplomat said.
